Safety.......

The question of safety came up in our last meeting. The idea that some teachers don't feel safe when being challenged or in a big crowd. I would suggest that we use whistles to summon additional support. They are cheap but effective methods of drawing attention to an area and bring in additional help. They are currently being used by the England Police and are quite effective.

The idea is simple, when you hear a whistle, come out of your rooms and see what's going on. If you can offer help, then do so. If not, the extra set of eyes and ears will assist in identifying the student in the misconduct act.

The sound of the whistle may very well cause the student to stop the misconduct act and usually run away.

Hall Pass and monitoring concept...

I am a strong supporter of the fluorescent green vest hall-pass concept. If a student is wondering around without a colorful safety vest, we then know that student is:
(a) Not a student at all.
(b) Skipping...Stealing, or dugger'n'up trouble.

*What would be extremely effective and entertaining, as well as a unique tactic would be if the security guards, or some trusted faculty could create a video log of the students who are skipping, or causing trouble, or not wearing a vest (sweep with camcorder during classes and record only when needed, when students are not wearing vest). Arm the security/Administrators with small camcorders that would allow the students to be recorded with a time stamp. We then could do something like Channel 12's criminal showcase (*assuming we have channel 1 next year and an on-campus student news show.*) "Have you seen this student...has not reported to 2nd period in 23 days"...etc...I believe this tactic would begin to deter the criminal activity, knowing that students can be videotaped as part of tardy sweeps or a way of physically recording students to log for disciplinary reasons...(Video is strong evidence).

This can all be done fairly easily, and we have the resources to begin. Even if not used in a news show format, the video evidence would be staggering, and great for House administrators when it comes time for that burden of proof.
